This paper presents the study of a single-phase axial symmetric turbulent jet impinging orthogonally on a surface. The problem has been simulated with two different CFD codes, namely the commercial package Ansys CFX 12.1 and the research code NEPTUNE_CFD 1.0.8, performing sensitivity analyses on different turbulence models, near wall treatment and mesh refinement in the wall region. The aim of this work was to perform code validation and benchmarking, as the impinging jet problem still represents a challenging case for testing turbulence models: near the jet axis there is a stagnation region which is dominated by normal straining of the fluid and many commonly used models, developed essentially for shear flow boundary layer, fail to predict the response of turbulence normal straining. Numerical results have been assessed against experimental data available in the ERCOFTAC database.
