LEARNING OBJECTIVES To show the simulation of a laparoscopic nephrectomy. To demonstrate the usefulness of multirow Ct with volume rendering in the planning of nephrectomy. ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to provide a detailed anatomical information of the arterial vascular supply and the venous drainage of the kidney donors, by means of multirow CT and volume rendering techniques. Twenty-three living donors of kidney allograft underwent pre operative assessment with four rows CT study of the abdomen. Using a stereoscopic display and a virtual reality platform (Dextroscope ® ; Volume Interactions/Bracco), and with the aid of an expert laparascopic surgeon, we were able to obtain a simulation of the laparoscopic view with highly detailed anatomical informations. Eight accessory renal arteries were found in 5 patients. Three patients had a single accessory renal artery, 2 patients had multiple. In 2 patients, the main left renal vein, was in a retroaortic position; in one patient, we observed a distal confluence of hilar branches of the renal vein, and in one patient we found an abnormal confluence between the left renal vein and the left ovaric vein.
