The aim of this article is to report the first findings of a research regarding the professional brotherhood of the so–called pedotti d’Istria, i.e. Istrian ship pilots, a selected group of seamen, that, around the middle of the fifteenth century and until the fall of the Most Serene Republic, where awarded the legal monopoly of piloting ships between the Istrian peninsula, located at the head of the Adriatic Sea in front of the Venetian lagoon, and the city of Venice.
