Abstract In this article we present a “western” reflection on a particular graphical representation of the additive structure, the pictorial equation, used in Chinese and Russian primary school educational practices. We will discuss the possibility of using the same representation also in Italian primary schools by presenting an educational experience of cultural transposition. Looking at educational practice in another culture is seen, in this perspective, as an opportunity to rethink our own.

We will discuss the possibility of using the same representation also in Italian primary schools by presenting an educational experience of cultural transposition.
