Abstract. The MAPPA Lab is a research laboratory of the University of Pisa dedicated to the application of mathematical model and to the open access to research data policy in Archaeology. The MAPPA lab was created during the MAPPA project, a research project aimed to the estimation of archaeological potential of the urban area of Pisa. The MAPPA Lab developed an archaeological webGIS (MAPPAgis) of the urban area of Pisa, and the first open archaeological data repository in Italy (MOD, MAPPA Open Data). The MOD is thought as a repository for all the archaeological raw data produced in Italy, and aspires to become the benchmark of open archaeology in Italy, developing new way of publishing archaeological data such as the recently published Data Book, and fostering a bottom-up approach to archaeological data through education, as proposed in the Open School of Archaeological Data.
