Since its official establishment in 1971 in Rome, the IOBC has been involved in the biological control of pests. However, from its very early phase, the West Palearctic Region Section has developed and applied simultaneously the concepts of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). These concepts provided not only the conceptual umbrella for biological control but also stimulated the development of more holistic, multidisciplinary approaches and facilitated the knowledge transfer into practice. The list of the current IOBC Working and Study Groups established contains only three Groups of pure biological control; the others are based on programs of integrated control like the Working Group on the Integrated Protection of Stored Products (IPSPs), whose participants met in Pisa the 3-6 September 2019 in a conference organized at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment (DAFE) of the University of Pisa. The close collaboration between DAFE and IOBC started at the early eighties, with Prof. Crovetti and Prof. Cavalloro as partners and friends. In fact, many events have seen DAFE both as participant and organizer like in 1984, when Pisa hosted the IOBC Joint Meeting on Integrated Pest Control in Olive Groves. The DAFE is now involved in four IOBC working groups of the West Palearctic Region Section: the “Working Group of Integrated Protection in Viticulture”, the “Working Group of Integrated Protection of Olive Crops” and the group of “Pheromones and Other Semio-Chemicals in Integrated Production”. Furthermore, DAFE is involved in the “Working Group of the Integrated Protection of Stored Products”. DAFE also supports the IOBC with important skills and charges (Prof. Lucchi, the treasurer and vice president of the West Palearctic Region Section). The conference of the Working Group of the Integrated Protection of Stored Products held in Pisa has been of great importance, not only because it allowed the meeting between the most skilled scientists on the topic, but also because it has provided, practical, science-based, and field-proven solutions to important problems and technology gaps in the protection of stored products. Significant contribution of the Working Group IPSPs activities are documented by the 128 papers presented in Pisa and even if general or theoretical recommendations rarely produced measurable effects in governmental documents, the Working Group IPSPs activities will be certainly crucial to get the IPM of Stored Products on the agenda of many national and several international organizations involved in protection of stored food. The organization of the event in Pisa has been an honour and a unique opportunity for me and I thank all the participants from the 25 different countries for giving me the opportunity to meet and appreciate their relevant scientific figures in the sector. I also sincerely thank the Convenor, Prof. Pasquale Trematerra, for his support and guide in the organization of the conference as well as our sponsors listed below for the financial support, the University of Pisa and the Director of DAFE with his staff for the logistic as well as all my colleagues that for various reasons helped me in this challenge.
