The book translates and comments the {\it Zhoubi suanjing [Classic to Calculate the Gnomon of the Zhou]}. It shows that the Chinese text offers a different proof of the property of right triangles, different but as valid as Euclid's. The Matteo Ricci's devaluation of Chinese mathematics is reported and discussed. A general assessment of Chinese mathematical sciences is pointed out.
