The axial fatigue behavior of gray cast iron under high compressive loads was investigated. The mechanisms of the damage nucleation and propagation, and the effects of the mean stress on the fatigue strength were especially focused. The fractographic analyses highlighted that the damage nucleation consists of distinct and diffused cracks around the graphite flakes. Cracks propagation is confined in a limited region and the final failure occurs as the cracks coalescence. A linear correlation between the fatigue strength and the mean stress involving the material static properties was finally found.
