IoT devices can generate a large amount of data that need to be transmitted along constrained networks possibly causing congestion and long delays. Edge caching of data can reduce the number of packet transmissions in the constrained network, but it can also lead to staleness of information whose content changes over time; so, the cached data must be refreshed timely. The update of the cached data introduces additional transmissions that can degrade the performance because of the constrained underlying technology. Therefore, a refreshing cache scheme should minimize the number of transmissions while guaranteeing freshness of the data collected at the network edge. Freshness of information can be quantified by the Age of Information (AoI) metrics. In this work we propose a model-driven cache management scheme implemented by a cache-enabled edge proxy that reduces the number of exchanged messages while meeting AoI requirements. Several simulations are then conducted to validate the proposed model and evaluate the performance of the cache management scheme.
