La Rinascente nell’Italia che cambia. Grandi magazzini e società. 1968-1989

The work intertwines the history of a large distribution company with a glorious past and the history of a country which, despite its imbalances, difficulties and setbacks, went from poverty to a significant level of wealth, thus placing itself amongst the most economically developed countries in the world. The reconstruction begins with two critical phases that united both events: the "subversive" charge of 1968 and a revolution in the entrepreneurial top management and in the ownership structure of La Rinascente, with the traumatic exit from the scene of the Borletti owners and the management represented by Cesare Brustio. In the seventies and eighties the company tried to adapt to the new needs and consumption habits of a society in transformation and in the large-scale distribution sector, it became the group "that sold everything to everybody". In their continuous process of diversification - the sales formats became eight- which reflected the drive towards multidivisional management, La Rinascente proceeded amidst successes, crises and new challenges until 1989, when the fall of the Berlin wall foreshadowed a new world order, the triumph of capitalism and democracy on a planet which would become more and more globalized and connected and less and less governed.

Il lavoro intreccia la storia di una grande impresa di distribuzione con un glorioso passato e la storia di un Paese che, pur fra squilibri, difficoltà e frenate, passa dalla miseria a un discreto livello di benessere, fino a collocarsi fra le nazioni economicamente più sviluppate al mondo. La ricostruzione inizia da due fasi critiche che accomunano entrambe le vicende: alla carica “eversiva” del Sessantotto fa riscontro una rivoluzione al vertice imprenditoriale e negli assetti proprietari de La Rinascente, con la traumatica uscita di scena della proprietà Borletti e della dirigenza rappresentata dalla figura di Cesare Brustio. Negli anni Settanta e Ottanta l’azienda cerca di adattarsi all’emergere di bisogni e consumi di una società in trasformazione e in un settore, quello della grande distribuzione, diventa il gruppo “che vende di tutto a tutti”. Nel continuo processo di diversificazione - otto diventano i format di vendita - che rispecchia la spinta verso una gestione multidivisionale, La Rinascente procede fra successi, crisi e nuove sfide fino al 1989, quando la caduta del muro di Berlino preconizza un nuovo ordine mondiale, il trionfo del capitalismo e della democrazia in un pianeta sempre più globalizzato e connesso e sempre meno governato.
