Abstract

The contemporary city is often the result of fragmentary logics, casualness and compartmentalization: there is a lack of “urban space culture” and a public and private architectural culture prevails “against” a public space culture. This facet is also found in Naples, where on the contrary, the historic city was specifically characterized by public spaces and both private and public green areas: the city’s eco-sustainable development is an objective of a particular value if we recognize the “centrality” of green expressed by cultures that have preceded us. Today, therefore, is not exclusively a matter of assessing this lack of green spaces and, at large, of fixtures and public services, but also of finding the causes of such inadequate current reality and put forward a suitable regeneration plan of Naples’ historic centre aimed to the development of nature’s presence, distinguishing element of the historic and urban landscape.
