The present article examines the connection between the scientific research in the field of literary studies and the creative activities of the eminent Russian philologist Mikhail Viktorovich Panov (1920—2001). Having been one of the most prominent scholars of Russian studies of the 20th century, Panov became an expert in the major branches of linguistics, as well as in a contiguous discipline such as literary studies. Except for his scientific works, M.V.Panov also authored some original poetic works, where an interesting correlation with his own theoretical research can be found. The analysis will focus on some excerpts from the poem “The Starry Sky”, which seems to be, in this regard, the most representative example: in Panov’s own words, here “an attempt is made to present those poetic impressions, which the author of these sketches receives when reading Russian poets”. In other words, the scholar-poet composes a sort of “poem on poems and versemakers”: by using avant-garde literary devices and quite an original idiostyle, Panov makes a hundred poetic portraits, depicting the representatives of the different ages and movements in the history of Russian poetry. Therefore, this article attempts to show how this work harmoniously combines tradition with innovation, poetic reflection with poetic creation, an approach to the poetic word which is both analytical and creative.
