Abstract

A set of four slabs made of a dark, glass-like material has been recovered from the houses of Pompeii. This article explores the function of these artefacts, placed on walls as “mirrors”, in context of Roman discourse on matters and their qualities. The owners and decorators of the houses of Pompeii chose these pieces for their exotic flavour and, more importantly, their potential to be compared to or contrasted with other materials and techniques, especially wall painting.
