BSE images of sample CLQ20, laminated diatomites, Upper Miocene Pisco Fm, Peru

These images are those used to buikd photo mosaics of thin sections of laminated diatomites from the Pisco Fm, Upper Miocene, Peru, in particular of sample CLQ20; this sample was collected at Cerro Los Quesos (14 30 58.3S; 75 43 04.5W) during the Peru 2013 research campaign, July 2013, Ica Desert, Peru. The mosaics were used to investigate relative bimodality of laminae, laminae content (terrigenous or biogenic particles, diatom species composing each lamina), laminae boundaries (straight or wavy, sharp or blunt) and laminae lateral continuity in order to give a peleoceanographic interpretation to the diatomites, in particular to study the thermocline depth at the time of the Pisco Fm diatomite deposition. Most of the BSE images were taken at Cardiff University (School of Earth and Environmental Sciences) in 2014; a small part of them were taken at the Univeristy of Pisa (Earth Sciences Departement) in 2021.
