Drawing on some of the main principles of Francesco Orlando’s studies on obsolete objects, his theory of the supernatural in literature, and his “Freudian trilogy”, this paper investigates the literary representation of Charlatanism. In particular, it offers an analysis of a selection of its most common themes and stylistic features. Specifically, this paper focuses on one of the characters of Donizetti’s Elisir d’amore, Doctor Dulcamara, thus also honoring Orlando’s deep love of the Opera.
