Ancient evidence on Aristotle's lost Technon Synagoge demonstrates that it was cast in the format of a doxography; moreover, a passage from Syrianus about Corax, who first named the rhetorical 'prooimion', is shown to be a fragment from the Synagoge. Contrary to contemporary 'revised histories' of rhetoric, Corax of Syracuse is no legendary figure.

Abstract: | Ancient evidence on Aristotle's lost Technon Synagoge demonstrates that it was cast in the format of a doxography; moreover, a passage from Syrianus about Corax, who first named the rhetorical 'prooimion', is shown to be a fragment from the Synagoge. Contrary to contemporary 'revised histories' of rhetoric, Corax of Syracuse is no legendary figure. |
