Composed between 1624 and 1628, "Porfiar hasta morir" ("Part XXIII de comedias") is a mature tragedy in which Lope de Vega deals with the myth of the troubadour Macías, a historical figure widely reworked in literature. Based on historical-genealogical sources, the ‘Fénix de los ingenios’ skilfully constructs a text in which the inevitability of an intense and untimely feeling drags the undisputed protagonist towards a fatal ending. The critical edition features a careful ‘collatio’ of the witnesses (a 17th-century print and a late manuscript) and also reviews the 19th-century, modern and contemporary editions, without forgetting the translations into other languages. The work is accompanied by a broad introductory study, also attentive to the opera's stage fortune, and a series of apparatus (variants, onomastic note, notes on the text), in accordance with the characteristics of the editions edited by the Prolope research group.
