Dalla torre d’avorio alla terra. Poesia e società in età tardoantica

After some reflections on new understandings of Late Antique poetry emerging in recent scholarship, the paper discusses the role that poetic production played in the culture and society of the East in the 4th-6th centuries, examining a series of epigraphic testimonies to the social prestige of poets. The inextricable link between education and poetry, and the function of rhetoric as a ‘basic grammar’, is illustrated by case studies ranging from high-brow poetry (Nonnus of Panopolis, Palladas) to that composed by low-brow poets, seen from the point of view of their intended audience. Another crucial aspect is the relationship between poetry and religion, which is reconsidered on the basis of the ideological commitment revealed by the poets in their works.

Dopo alcune considerazioni sulla nuova visione della poesia tardoantica che si sta affermando nella ricerca recente, il lavoro discute del ruolo che la produzione poetica ha avuto nella cultura e nella società in Oriente nei secoli IV-VI, esaminando una serie di testimonianze epigrafiche sul prestigio sociale dei poeti. Il nesso imprescindibile fra educazione e poesia e la funzione della retorica come “grammatica di base” viene presentato attraverso casi di studio che vanno dalla poesia più elevata (Nonno di Panopoli, Pallada) a quella composta da poeti meno sorvegliati, considerati dal punto di vista del pubblico cui si rivolgevano. Un altro aspetto cruciale, quello del rapporto fra poesia e religione, viene riconsiderato sulla base dell’impegno ideologico che i poeti rivelano nelle loro opere.
