The use of RFID automatic identification technology for the tracking of pebble movement on an artificial beach at Marina di Pisa (Italy) is described in this paper. The aim of this work is to prove the effectiveness of this technology for the tracking of underwater pebbles and to show how important data retrieved with such a kind of system can be. RFID technology makes the marked pebbles traceable for extended periods of time and allows an insight definition of coarse grains movement along the coast. A total of 96 pebbles, equipped with RFID transponders, have been positioned along the beach, under and outside water. Retrieving campaigns have been performed using an ad-hoc waterproof RFID Reader able to work under water as well. The good performances achieved with this system at Marina di Pisa offer an innovative instrument to study coastal erosion and encourage its use in other scenarios.
