The walls of Lucca are unique among European cities for their state of integrity: the city walls extend for more than 4 km with ten bastions and represent the fulcrum of Lucca's defence system, even though they have never been involved in warfare. From 2013 to 2019, the city walls will be the subject of a programme of restoration, recovery, conservation and enhancement works, divided into eight lots, largely financed thanks to the contribution of the local Cassa di Risparmio Foundation, but today, due to the lack of systematic maintenance, the conservation problems of the wall face of ten years ago are reappearing. Today, it is also essential to reduce the energy consumption of the monument's lighting system, which has recently been reduced in the number of hours it is switched on by the municipality. The grant will assess the possibility of carrying out planned maintenance and a new energy-efficient system, also with a view to the complex's World Heritage application.
