Abstract

Reducing anthropogenic inputs in order to curb the consumption of 'natural and cultural' resources, especially if they are non-renewable, as is increasingly being forced upon us by sudden and global climate change, means designing and implementing sustainable projects for the restoration and enhancement of cultural heritage, with the consequence that any action, not only on new construction but also on historic buildings and monuments, must take due account of the energy requirements involved. In this context, it was considered useful to look at the content of an innovative public-private partnership pilot action, the first of its kind of this scale and economic value under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, which is being implemented in Naples at the Capodimonte Museum and the Real Bosco. The work currently underway, which focuses on the Reggia, aims to modernise the museum while respecting its history and uniqueness, seventy years after it became a National Museum. Renovated spaces and digital technologies will make the visit more comfortable and interactive. In addition to the works planned for the Museum, an underground cable duct will be built along the main routes of the Bosco. This initiative will make the Capodimonte Museum and the Real Bosco di Capodimonte one of the most advanced cultural sites in Europe and may serve as a model to be replicated in other museums, reconciling the requirements of landscape protection and historical and artistic heritage with the indispensable requirements of energy efficiency.
