In this paper, a novel broadband active frequency selective surface (AFSS) absorber is designed. The AFSS absorber consists of top-layer FSS patches, an intermediate air cavity, and a metal ground. Within the top layer FSS, PIN diodes and resistors are embedded, and the bias network is implemented through vertical metal columns connected with the bottom ground. Furthermore, by varying the voltage across the PIN diodes, the entire structure can achieve continuous tuning between total reflection and absorption levels larger than -10 dB within the adjustable range of 2.1-5.7 GHz.

Abstract
