A thorough understanding of winter ecology is essential to identify a species’ ecological requirements and assess its capacity to adapt to environmental change. In this study, we analysed the factors influencing the selection of winter roosting and foraging sites of the Eurasian Stone-curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus) in the province of Grosseto, using eight years of diurnal roost monitoring integrated with GPS data. The occurrence of diurnal roosts was associated with flat terrain and negatively affected by road density, highlighting the species’ sensitivity to anthropogenic disturbance. Vegetation structure also influenced group size. Although olive groves were generally avoided as roosting sites, they were positively selected for nocturnal foraging. The use of agricultural habitats during feeding activity showed marked inter-individual variability. The heterogeneous landscape of the Maremma area, still characterized by relatively widespread extensive farming practices, therefore appears to represent a key factor for the wintering and conservation of the species in the region.

Abstract
The heterogeneous landscape of the Maremma area, still characterized by relatively widespread extensive farming practices, therefore appears to represent a key factor for the wintering and conservation of the species in the region.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
