This poster reconsiders the so-called neo-neuter of central Italian vernaculars as a family of mass-neuter configurations whose exponence is distributed across phonological loci and agreement domains. Four diagnostics are kept apart (lexical mass-neuter, neutral agreement, alternating neuter, distributed exponent), and the contrast is analysed within Government Phonology and Element Theory as a feature-to-exponent mapping whose locus may migrate when the original cue is neutralized: the final vowel (Macerata type), the consonantal portion of the determiner (Fondi, where M.SG /j-u/ opposes N.MASS /l-u/), the failure of a phonological process (San Donato Val di Comino, where the mass-neuter article lacks the high-vocoid trigger of propagation), or agreement morphology beyond the DP (participial agreement in Servigliano and Amandola). The mass-neuter is thus not the residue of a single ending but a morphosyntactic contrast that remains active after its original vocalic cue is weakened or displaced.

Abstract
The mass-neuter is thus not the residue of a single ending but a morphosyntactic contrast that remains active after its original vocalic cue is weakened or displaced.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
