ABSTRACT Collections accessibility and availability: the 3D digital archive of the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa The recent development of 3D technologies and their multiple applications in museology led to the creation of various digital archives which make collections accessible throughout the world. Since 2022 the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa uses 3D technologies (structured light scanning and photogrammetry) to enhance its zoological and paleontological historical collections by making available the 3D models of the most significant specimens. To date, over 270 models have been published on the Sketchfab platform, to improve their diffusion and usability on the web. To further increase their diffusion, thanks to a project funded by Wikimedia Italia called “Musei Archivi e Biblioteche 2024”, 100 models have been also published on Wikimedia Commons with a free license (CC BY-SA 4.0) and many of them have already been linked to the corresponding Wikipedia pages.
