The paper takes into account, as a case study, a web forum hosting discussions by adult students of Italian. The posts included in the study were written from students of Italian descent having English as maternal language and living in countries where English is the preferred language. Such students often willingly add to the discussion information about their demographic status; the study shows that a linguistic assessment of their linguistic level can independently confirm many of the status information offered by posters. Finally, the study hints to the possibility that in similar settings the linguistic features currently used to evaluate the performance of students can be used to computationally validate demographic data.

Abstract
The paper takes into account, as a case study, a web forum hosting discussions by adult students of Italian. The posts included in the study were written from students of Italian descent having English as maternal language and living in countries where English is the preferred language. Such students often willingly add to the discussion information about their demographic status; the study shows that a linguistic assessment of their linguistic level can independently confirm many of the status information offered by posters. Finally, the study hints to the possibility that in similar settings the linguistic features currently used to evaluate the performance of students can be used to computationally validate demographic data.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
