Political protection is a crucial resource in illegal and informal political exchanges. This WP analyzed the role of third-party enforcers - political parties, political bosses, but also organized crime - as guarantors in the market for corrupt exchanges. Systemic and widespread corruption - when partners are not connected by pre-existing reputational or trust links - generates in fact a genuine demand for "protection" in illegal deals. Those political actors who has the power (as well as the capabilities) to supply it acquire then a crucial role both in legal and in ordinary political exchanges.

Abstract
Political protection is a crucial resource in illegal and informal political exchanges. This WP analyzed the role of third-party enforcers - political parties, political bosses, but also organized crime - as guarantors in the market for corrupt exchanges. Systemic and widespread corruption - when partners are not connected by pre-existing reputational or trust links - generates in fact a genuine demand for "protection" in illegal deals. Those political actors who has the power (as well as the capabilities) to supply it acquire then a crucial role both in legal and in ordinary political exchanges.File in questo prodotto:
