The book is one of the steps of a long-term project in which the editors and authors have been engaged for more than twenty years. The aim of this project is to study the phenomena related to the institutionalisation, professionalisation, and spread of political economy throughout the world. The present book studies the spread of economic science into the sphere of politics in different areas of the world through the activity of economists and the development of economic debates in Parliaments. The period covered by the research corresponds to the establishment of liberal constitutions in most European countries, the so-called 'liberal age'. The book shows that in the period examined, which was a decisive period of strengthening, spread and institutionalisation of political economy, economic debate flourished in the context not only of policy making but also of political passions of a generally noble and disinterested nature. It provided a language to examine some of the most dramatic questions of the time and taught many to cultivate political ambitions. The controversies that interested economists were sometimes of a theoretical nature, but very often of more practical origins and consequences.
