Choice of clone is crucial in set¬ting up a vineyard, and can influence quantitative and quali¬tative results. Knowledge of the characteristics of the various commercially available "Sangiovese" clones is scanty. The "Chianti Classico 20001" Project has therefore desi¬gned a study to investigate the behavior of some of the main clones of this grapevine variety. Research was carried out on a total of five experimental fields set up in five zones of the Chianti Classico area characterized by different soil and climate conditions. In each field, seven "Sangiovese" clones (AP-SG-1, Montalcino 42, SS-F9-A5-48, Peccioli 1, R24, SG 12T e RIO) grafted onto two rootstocks (1103 P e 420 A) were established. Identical cultural practices were adopted for all fields. Comparative determinations of phenology, ferti¬lity, vegetative active and ripening curves of the individual clones were performed for four years. Results on the main phenologic and bio-agronomic characteristics of each clone provided interesting information, with potential practical application for rational choice of planting material in new vineyards to be set up in Tuscany, in particular in the Chianti Classico area. In addition, the parameters exa¬mined showed intra- and inter-environmental behavioral differences, at times pronounced, among the various clones. Some clones presented fairly Constant vegetative-productive behaviour during the four-year period, while others showed greater variability depending on the year and zone.
