Choice of appropriate planting density results from a compromise between the need for machine access to carry out crop management practices and achievement of an adequate qualitative level of the product. Recently there has been increas¬ing interest in evaluating factors capable of exerting positive influ¬ence on grape quality, with special emphasis on adopting higher plant¬ing densities. The present research was therefore undertaken to improve knowledge of "Sangiovese" production behaviour at different planting densities in the environ¬ment of the Tuscan Maremma, specifically in the Monteregio Doc: zone of Massa Marittima (province of Grosseto). The trial was conducted in 1998-1999 in a vineyard set up in 1994, comparing four planting densities (2,8 x 1,2; 2,0 x 1,5; 2,5 x 1,0; 2,0 x 0,75) ranging from a minimum of 2980 to a maximum of 6670 vines/ha. The results showed that the four planting densities adopted seems not to have had relevant influence on grape quality and yield, even though we can observe a higher veg¬etative activity per unit surface area at the highest planting density. Since the vegetative behaviour was not accompanied by a higher grape quality, we can observe that, in spite of classical idea, vines at the higher painting densities didn't show any vigour reduction caused by vines competition. We can therefore conclude that the influence of planting densities on grape quality depends on several technical and agronomic factors like variety, rootstock, cultural practices, canopy spatial distribu¬tion, exposed surface area and pedo-climatic conditions. It is therefore necessary not to extend the result observed in a cer¬tain area to all viticultural zone. The results showed in the present work refers to young vines and for this reason they have to be considered as preliminary observations.

Ricerche sulla densità di piantagione del "Sangiovese" in Maremma Toscana: risultati di un triennio di osservazioni
