The reliability of hematological results obtained by LaserCyte (LC) in the management of oncohematological disorders has been evaluated. LC is a laser cell counter that provides 24 hematological parameters including both the WBC differential and reticulocyte count. Blood samples collected from 41 dogs affected by malignant lymphoma (29 cases), leukemia (7 cases) and miscellaneous blood disorders (5 cases) have been processed. Results from LC were compared using linear regression with those retrieved from impedance cell counter, manual WBC differential count and manual reticulocyte count. The occurrence of LC alarm codes was noted. The concordance between two cell- counters was overall good. The concordance between LC and manual WBC differential count was dependent to alarm codes of LC. The LC provides reliable results in diagnosing and monitoring oncohematological disorders thanks also to the alarm codes supplied that indicate to the clinical pathologist to review carefully a stained blood smear. The only parameter for LC that resulted unreliable was the eosinophil count.
