During the erythrocyte morphology evaluation in dogs performing the complete blood count (CBC) the occurrence of ‘quatrefoil’ erythrocytes (RBCs) has been observed. The ‘quatrefoil’ RBCs have been documented in blood smears both by optic and scanning electron microscopes. The prevalence was 3.89 % over 3,958 CBC and mainly observed between the body and feathered edge of blood smears. This alteration is not statistically related to breed and sex but with the age (older dogs p< 0.0001). It is frequently associated to other morphological erythrocyte modifications but is not statistically associated to any one. It is statistically associated to dogs showing less both total leukocyte and neutrophil count in comparison to the population of dogs without the appearance of ‘quadrefoil’ RBCs. Few hypothesis have been formulated about the ‘quatrefoil’ RBCs origin such as artifactual, dacryocyte overlapping, and particular adhesion forces among two circulating RBCs in the blood stream (tank-trading and/or tumbling).

Abstract
Few hypothesis have been formulated about the ‘quatrefoil’ RBCs origin such as artifactual, dacryocyte overlapping, and particular adhesion forces among two circulating RBCs in the blood stream (tank-trading and/or tumbling).I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
