IT4PS, a project for encouraging the use of spreadsheets and database systems to solve typical problems in university education, is discussed. The subject areas for this project are economics, medicine and statistics for social sciences. In the area of medicine and pharmacy, managing patient records was taken as a prototypical example to convey the advantages of using database technology. The project resulted in development of a self learning tool which supports the student in solving problems with a problem decomposition approach.
