The red palm weevil, a species native from Melanesia and Southeast Asian region, has occurred in Italy since 2004. Soon after its introduction, a severe and progressive decline of the palm trees heritage in many Italian Regions has been observed. The damages are related to the larval feeding activity inside the woody plant tissues and to the complete destruction of the main sprout. At this moment, none of the control methods suggested seems to be able to guarantee a definite protection of palms. Prevention in areas where the red palm weevil is absent or the populations are still reduced, seems to be the only method which can limit its diffusion.
