A phenomenological equation of state (EOS) for hot asymmetric nuclear matter is proposed. It incorporates, as particular cases, the traditional Skyrme EOS and the Gale--Bertsch--Das Gupta EOS. The properties of the present EOS are investigated and compared with those of microscopic equations of state. The liquid-gas phase transition is studied for different values of the neutron-proton asymmetry. The structure of non--rotating neutron stars at zero temperature is calculated.

Abstract
