As genetic erosion interested the Italian Vitis germplasm our Department initiated a project for the rd of Tuscan grapevine safeguard in order to preserve the biodiversity. On six vineyard collections around eight hundred accessions were preliminary described and genotyped afterwards more detailed studies were carried out to evaluate morphological traits, agronomic behaviour, grape and wine quality. A software for a “universal grapevine database” have been developed to support the activity of characterization of grapevine biodiversity (www.vitisdb.it)
