This paper presents the micromachined field emission electric thruster development activity recently undertaken at Centrospazio. Building upon past experience in Field Emission Electric Propulsion (FEEP), this new research effort is aimed at exploiting the interesting properties of silicon as a structural material, and the flexibility of the relevant micromachining techniques, to manufacture a miniaturized thruster based on the field ionization principle. The rationale of this project is explained and the present design is outlined and discussed. A first prototype is presented and areas requiring further investigation are identified.

Abstract
This paper presents the micromachined field emission electric thruster development activity recently undertaken at Centrospazio. Building upon past experience in Field Emission Electric Propulsion (FEEP), this new research effort is aimed at exploiting the interesting properties of silicon as a structural material, and the flexibility of the relevant micromachining techniques, to manufacture a miniaturized thruster based on the field ionization principle. The rationale of this project is explained and the present design is outlined and discussed. A first prototype is presented and areas requiring further investigation are identified.File in questo prodotto:
