The analysis of some characteristic aspects of Matéi Visniec’s playwriting brings us to interpret his works as the eclectic result of the coexistence and merging of multiple expressive modalities, both textual and stage related. The metatheatricality and the bilingual re-writing (as a form of auctorial intertextuality) lead to a complex illustration of the concept of performance theatre, explained through the bias of two different versions of the topos of “theatre within theatre” in the plays Angajare de clovn [Petit boulot pour vieux clown] and L’histoire du communisme racontée aux malades mentaux. This topos is first studied at the thematic level and its rich semantic potential is highlighted through the bilingual nature of the writing. The potentialities of the pattern of “theatre within theatre” also operate fruitfully in terms of stage practice, placing Visniec’s writing, destined to the stage, within the frame of the new dramatic language, several other aesthetic elements straightening its ties with the theoretical approaches of postmodern drama.
