How languages express sensory perception. This paper reviews modern studies of the linguistic expression of perception. A first strand regards object properties which are experienced, i.e. categories of sensibilia (for the categorization of sensory adjectives, see Berlin and Kay 1969 for basic colour terms, and more recently for the temperature lexicon KoptjevskajaTamm 2014; 2015). A second strand focuses on verbs of perception, i.e. the lexical and syntactic expression of modality whereby languages and speakers conceive the perception experience. We adopt the perception verb pattern by Viberg (1983; 2001) and Ibarretxe Antuñano’s (1999, etc.) embodied cognition perspective on polysemy and metaphors in perception verbs.

Abstract
How languages express sensory perception. This paper reviews modern studies of the linguistic expression of perception. A first strand regards object properties which are experienced, i.e. categories of sensibilia (for the categorization of sensory adjectives, see Berlin and Kay 1969 for basic colour terms, and more recently for the temperature lexicon KoptjevskajaTamm 2014; 2015). A second strand focuses on verbs of perception, i.e. the lexical and syntactic expression of modality whereby languages and speakers conceive the perception experience. We adopt the perception verb pattern by Viberg (1983; 2001) and Ibarretxe Antuñano’s (1999, etc.) embodied cognition perspective on polysemy and metaphors in perception verbs.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
