This paper is concerned with the issue of joint iterative channel estimation and data decoding, i.e., the use of soft information to estimate the fading channel within a turbo receiver. After formalizing the problem in the Bayesian minimum mean square error estimation context, we devise a low-complexity sub-optimum algorithm allowing us to perform reliable joint channel estimation and decoding without any a priori statistical knowledge of the fading process. As case study, we focus on a filter-bank-based multi-carrier burst transmission over a time and frequency selective fading channel. Simulation results in terms of overall decoder BER show that the proposed scheme is well suited for fast fading environments.
