There is a belief among scholars that the municipium of Caere were depopulated and hardly vital starting from the first century AD. However, the analysis of the epigraphic and archaeological evidence, coming from the necropolises (in particular the Banditaccia), the urban centre and the relevant territory in the first centuries of the empire, shows the economic and productive dynamism of Roman Caere, based on a civic centre still active from an administrative point of view.
