Within the framework of a (TACIS) project supported by the European Commission, the University of Pisa had the opportunity to evaluate deeply the safety of the RBMK reactors (Chernobyl type) in cooperation with the Russian designers, NIKIET Company. In this framework and in order to improve the current safety of the existing reactors, the Individual Channel Monitoring (ICM) system was proposed (with applicability demonstrated). Installation of the ICM This aims at sending an alarm in control room, thus activating reactor scram, should any one of the about 1500 channels experience a rod surface temperature excursion, before the possible damage of the fuel channel is propagated to neighbor channels.
