The Cinta Senese is one of the most important local swine breeds in Italy, thanks to its widespread presence and high-quality productions. This work focuses on the distribution of Cinta Senese sows in Tuscany, their native region, and points out some of their main reproductive performance parameters. In the last decade (1995-2004), a total of 214 farms (1439 sows) were analyzed; data was recordered from registration of National Association of Pig Breeders on-line database. The Cinta Senese displayed a positive trend: the number of farms increased from 31 in 2000 to 197 by the end of 2004. Siena, Arezzo and Florence showed higher numbers of breedings and sows (nearly 68% in both cases). Births were concentrated in the months from March to September, avoiding periods with unfavorable climate conditions: mortality in January was nearly 30% as average, while in June it was 16%. Mortality percentage decreased until a sow’s 7th litter (15%), after which it rose to 25%, equivalent to that of primiparous sows. This parameter showed a marked decrease, corresponding to the organization of the Anagraphic Register of Cinta Senese (2001), which may have stimulated and supported farmers. Average age of sows at their first delivery was 512±147.26 days, showing an improvement over the years. Sows gave birth up to 11 times, indicating an interesting longevity. Statistical analysis underlined the significant influence of climate, especially in the development of the piglet.
