In small and often isolated systems power supply is likely to reach very high costs. Fuel supply and generator maintenance are very expensive issues and the connection to the grid might require very large investment compared to the load served. Renewable Energy Sources (RES) such as wind are suitable to give a strong contribution to reduce the cost of supply. But the main issue posed by RES is their intermittent nature which makes the power output hardly dispatchable and controllable. The maximum acceptable level of wind power in an isolated system depends on the solutions chosen for ensuring a good integration and no standard choices exist [1]. Storage systems can play a major role towards higher levels of renewables and to improve their cost effectiveness.
