This essay analyzes the roots of the current constitutional definition of the family in Colombia. Initially, I will make a brief historical introduction to offer a context to the study. Then, I will examine the case-law to determine the distinctive features of the family in Colombia. In that sense, I will point out the recognized family forms, considering pluralism and equality as the most important principles to draw the outline of the family.
