Fin dalla prima metà del XIX secolo, Viareggio assume alcuni connotati che ne contrassegneranno l’identità economica e sociale, grazie ad un modello di sviluppo incentrato sul turismo balneare. La città iniziò ad espandersi grazie alle agevolazioni accordate dal governo borbonico, ma fu in seguito all’unificazione nazionale che si assiste ad un vero e proprio salto qualitativo, grazie agli investimenti infrastrutturali - materiali e immateriali - sostenuti soprattutto dal municipio. Nell’ultimo decennio dell’Ottocento la configurazione urbanistica di Viareggio, delle sue infrastrutture e delle strutture balneari era ormai stabilmente delineata. Nei primi due decenni del XX secolo la struttura sociale ed economica della città assunse una configurazione destinata a consolidarsi ulteriormente, con la costruzione di nuove strutture ricettive, hotel e di nuovi stabilimenti balneari, anche grazie alle politiche del regime fascista, che aveva individuato proprio nel turismo una linea di sviluppo economico per la Toscana. SEASIDE TOURISM IN VIAREGGIO BETWEEN 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY Since the first half of the nineteenth century, Viareggio takes on some features that will mark its economic and social identity, thanks to a development model centered on seaside tourism. The city began to expand thanks to the concessions granted by the Bourbon government, but it was following the national unification that there was a real qualitative leap, thanks to the infrastructural investments - tangible and intangible - sustained above all by the municipality. In the last decade of the nineteenth century the urban configuration of Viareggio, of its infrastructures and of the bathing structures was by now firmly delineated. In the first two decades of the twentieth century the social and economic structure of the city assumed a configuration destined to consolidate itself further, with the construction of new accommodation facilities, hotels and new bathing establishments, also thanks to the policies of the fascist regime, which he had identified precisely in the tourism an economic development line for Tuscany.
