The paper aims to show how Giuseppe Baretti acted as a cultural mediator in the period that followed his return to Italy in the 1760s, highlighting how, ever since his first stay in England from 1751 to 1760, he had effectively interiorised the main features of the periodical essay, one of the most substantial literary bequests of the Augustan Age. Focusing specific attention on the Frusta letteraria, the analysis will be directed towards a re-evaluation of Baretti’s direct agency over the spread of the periodical essay, bypassing the widespread view according to which his was a merely passive re-enactment of the lesson offered by Samuel Johnson’s Rambler. The goal of the present contribution is that of widening the spectrum of the possible influences, including not only Richard Steele and Joseph Addison, but also other stimuli deriving from the English critical milieu at large, for instance the satirical observation of contemporary society first pioneered by Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope.
