In the second half of the 18th century, Giuseppe Baretti (1719-1789) played an important role as an Anglo-Italian cultural me- diator in London. The paper aims at illustrating his activity qua Italian teacher by analyzing one of the works he specifically wrote for the diffusion of the Italian language in England, namely his Easy Phraseol- ogy for the Use of Young Ladies (1775). Here language teaching appears closely connected with the intention to spread the knowledge of Italian cultural and literary heritage, as well as to encourage the awareness of the importance of a fecund cross-fertilization between different lan- guages and cultures. Easy Phraseology is characterized by a dense texture of metanarrative, metadidactic and, last but not least, literary and cul- tural references, all contributing to an overall mediation project whose principles still appear extremely modern.
L’operazione di mediazione culturale condotta dall’esule Giuseppe Baretti (1719-1789) nella Londra del secondo Settecento è legata alla sua attività d’insegnante d’italiano. Il saggio focalizza l’at- tenzione sul Baretti glottodidatta, in particolare sull’Easy Phraseology for the Use of Young Ladies, un testo pubblicato nel 1775, il cui intento è di fornire al discente una conoscenza approfondita non soltanto del si- stema linguistico, ma anche della cultura e della letteratura del paese in cui la lingua è parlata, sollecitando la consapevolezza dell’importanza dello scambio e della feconda interazione tra pari. L’opera lascia traspa- rire una fittissima trama di riferimenti metanarrativi, metadidattici e, non ultimi, letterari e culturali, delineando un progetto di mediazione i cui principi appaiono ancora estremamente attuali.
