Ancora sulle fonti della Povest’ Strašna: alle origini della riflessione sul monachesimo certosino di Massimo il Greco

The article deals with the sources of the Povest’ strašna by Maximus the Greek. The Povest’, which was likely written in the period 1518-1525, consists of two narratives; the first concerns the university of Paris, the Grande Chartreuse, and the Carthusian order and the second Girolamo Savonarola and the Dominican order. A philological investigation of the author’s statement of truthfulness in the first narrative led to the typology of his sources, direct, written, and oral; from an historical, literary, and iconographic investigation of the description of the Grande Chartreuse and the Carthusian order, it was shown that the author’s experience of the spaces in the Certosa of San Lorenzo at Galluzzo and the Dominican regula in the cloister of San Marco in Florence, i.e. direct sources, inspired his narrative. The present author now aims at investigating written sources of the same narrative by focusing on Maximus the Greek’s description of the Carthusian regula. In order to identify them, the description will be compared in its content, from the individual monk’s life in the cell to the administration of the order, with the Carthusian Statutes, grounded in the Consuetudines Cartusiae by Guigo I, and the ordinances of the first general chapters, along with literary descriptions of Carthusian monasticism.

Il saggio verte sulle fonti della Povest’ strašna di Massimo il Greco. L’opera, che sembra appartenere al periodo 1518-1525, si compone di due narrazioni, la prima dedicata all’ateneo parigino, la Grande Chartreuse e l’ordine certosino, e la seconda a Girolamo Savonarola e all’ordine domenicano. L’indagine filologica della dichiarazione di veridicità premessa alla prima narrazione ha permesso di definire la tipologia delle sue fonti, che include fonti dirette, scritte e orali, e di stabilire che la testimonianza sulla Grande Chartreuse e l’ordine certosino è ispirata sia agli ambienti della Certosa fiorentina di San Lorenzo al Galluzzo, sia alla regola domenicana. In questa sede si intende estendere l’indagine sulle genesi della Povest’ alle fonti scritte della prima narrazione. A tal fine si elegge a oggetto di indagine la descrizione della regola certosina offerta al suo interno, che nei suoi contenuti – dalla vita nella cella fino alla forma di governo dell’ordine – sarà valutata nel confronto con gli Statuti certosini, il cui nucleo fondamentale è costituito dalle Consuetudines Cartusiae di Guigo I e dalle ordinanze dei primi capitoli generali, e con alcune testimonianze letterarie sul monachesimo certosino, verificando l’ipotesi di un loro possibile impiego come fonti.
