The present article aims at recreating the biblical, hymnographic, patristic and Byzantine sources of Kirill Turovskij’s Slovo o snjatii tela Christova s kresta (Sermon on the removal of Christ’s body from the cross). Given the strict relationship between Kirill Turovskij’s homiletics and the liturgical and patristic traditions, study of the sources required a reconstruction of the liturgical context in which the Slovo was delivered and the collective memory with regard to the feast day (theThird Sunday after Easter: Joseph of Arimathea and the Myrrh-bearing women), as well as to feasts similar in content. The choice of possible sources was governed by the principles of contextuality, affinity, and compatibility. Comparative analysis led to the actual sources of the Slovo, recovering them in the hymnography of the Third Sunday after Easter, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, and in several patristic and Byzantine homilies for these very feasts days and for Easter; other sources included one homily on the Gospel of Mathew and an oration on the lament of the Mother of God. The identification of sources led in turn to a focus on the synergy of different elements creating the polysemy of the discourse and the compositional techniques governing the creative process.
